If you have asthma or any kind of obstructive lung disease, you may think you can't heal the lining of your lungs. Conventional medicine will tell you there's no cure for asthma. So this new study might come as a surprise.

In this new study, researchers wanted to find out if taking the herb ginseng orally could help damaged lung tissue in mice. So they divided mice with chronic asthma and diseased lung tissue into four different groups. They didn't give anything to one group (the control). They gave a placebo to the second group. The third group took dexamethasone (a synthetic glucocorticoid drug). And they gave oral ginseng to the fourth group.

They gave the mice in the ginseng group 2 grams per kg per day of ginseng. That dose would correspond to about 150 mg for the average-size adult. The mice taking dexamethasone took 1 mg per kg per day once daily for one week. Then the researchers evaluated the lung tissue in all four groups.

Here's what they found: The mice taking the ginseng were the only mice that experienced significant change. The ginseng was able to reverse chronic changes in the lungs of these mice.

When the researchers compared the group taking ginseng with the dexamethasone group, they found that the ginseng group had significantly lower numbers of mast cells (which cause severe allergies and inflammation).

What's amazing about this study is that the ginseng actually improved lung tissues. Very few lung disease treatments can do that. Since the improvement came from oral ginseng, it's likely the improvement came from better circulation to the lungs. Ginseng is great for your circulation.

With that in mind, there's one caveat to using ginseng. Much like caffeine, it can overstimulate you, giving you headaches and gastrointestinal problems. So make sure you pay attention to how you feel while you're taking it. If you have asthma, you probably won't have any problems.

So give ginseng a try. It might just reverse any tissue damage you have in your lungs. You can find it in any health food store.
